About the CompanyThe Custodial Census Specialist is responsible for the daily management and oversight of the custodial care census across assigned skilled nursing facilities. This role ensures the accuracy of resident census records, insurance eligibility, payer compliance, authorization status, and required documentation to support reimbursement and continuity of care. The Custodial Census Specialist serves as a primary liaison between facilities, managed care organizations, and internal departments, proactively resolving census discrepancies, eligibility issues, and authorization concerns while delivering exceptional customer service. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
About the RoleEssential ResponsibilitiesManage the daily custodial care census for assigned skilled nursing facilities, ensuring resident information is accurate, complete, and up to date.Monitor daily admissions, discharges, transfers, and payer changes, updating internal systems accordingly.Verify insurance eligibility and benefits to ensure appropriate payer assignment and reimbursement.Review authorization requirements and maintain accurate authorization records for custodial residents.Collaborate with facilities, managed care organizations, and internal teams to resolve census discrepancies, eligibility concerns, and authorization issues.Respond promptly to AMP communications and other payer notifications, taking appropriate action to maintain accurate resident records.Ensure discharge documentation is received, reviewed, and uploaded into the appropriate systems in a timely manner.Maintain accurate documentation supporting eligibility verification, payer communications, authorizations, and census updates.Identify and escalate potential reimbursement risks, payer issues, or documentation deficiencies to leadership.Monitor work queues and prioritize daily tasks to meet departmental turnaround time expectations.Maintain compliance with payer guidelines, company policies, HIPAA regulations, and documentation standards.Build and maintain positive working relationships with facility staff, insurance representatives, and internal stakeholders.Participate in process improvement initiatives designed to increase efficiency, accuracy, and client satisfaction.Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
QualificationsWorking knowledge of insurance plans preferred.Experience working with skilled nursing facilities, long-term care, or post-acute care preferred.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and Outlook.Experience using electronic medical records (EMR), payer portals, and healthcare software systems preferred.
