Cost Accountant – Job DescriptionPosition SummaryThis is a full-time, on-site position for a Cost Accountant. The ideal candidate will be responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and controlling costs related to operations, projects, and capital expenditures while ensuring financial accuracy and compliance with established accounting standards.In this role, the Cost Accountant will work closely with Finance, Operations, Engineering, Procurement, and Project Management teams to provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making. The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to evaluate financial and operational data to improve cost efficiency and budget performance
.Key ResponsibilitiesAnalyze project, operational, and maintenance costs to ensure accuracy and financial integrityPrepare and maintain cost reports, budget analyses, and financial forecastsMonitor actual expenditures against approved budgets and identify cost variancesInvestigate cost discrepancies and recommend corrective actionsSupport the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports related to cost accountingParticipate in budgeting and forecasting processes for operational and capital projectsAssist in the development and maintenance of cost allocation methodologies.Review invoices, purchase orders, contracts, and supporting documentation to ensure proper cost classificationCollaborate with internal stakeholders to improve cost tracking and financial reporting processesSupport internal and external audits by providing required documentation and financial analysesEnsure compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and applicable financial regulationsIdentify opportunities for process improvements that enhance financial accuracy and operational efficiency.
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.Minimum of 3 years of experience in cost accounting, project accounting, or financial analysis.Strong understanding of cost accounting principles, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.Experience analyzing project costs, capital expenditures, and operational expenses.Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.Experience with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, or similar) is preferred.Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities. Effective written and verbal communication skills.Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred QualificationsCPA designation or progress toward certification is a plus.Experience supporting infrastructure, construction, engineering, utilities, transportation, or industrial operations is preferred.Knowledge of internal controls, variance analysis, and financial performance metricsExperience with project costing and capital project accounting is highly desirable.
