Family Advocate

About the role

The Family Advocate supports victim rights when a child has experienced abuse or trauma, or is involved in a criminal investigation. The role helps youth and non-offending caregivers understand the criminal justice process, provides support during court proceedings, and connects families with services that promote healing.

The advocate communicates with Child Protection Services, Law Enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, Medical Providers, Counselors, and other essential services. The role also engages with youth to explain victim rights, understand their views on the investigation or prosecution, and advocate for them in a trauma-informed manner.

Responsibilities

• Assess client needs, develop plans to meet those needs, and coordinate appropriate referrals.
• Maintain engagement with victims and non-offending caregivers throughout their involvement with CAP to promote healing and justice.
• Communicate regularly with multi-disciplinary team members about case updates and recommendations.
• Attend court proceedings, provide support, and connect families with services such as trauma therapy, medical services, financial assistance, and access to the Office of Victim Services.
• Engage with youth and children to explain victim rights and gauge their opinions on investigations and prosecutions.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in human services is preferred.
• A minimum associate degree in a relevant field and two years of experience in child services, including case management.
• Strong communication skills.
