Job description
Cliff Services is hiring a Mainframe Architect (AWS Migration Specialist) for a long-term contract in Richmond, Virginia. This onsite role is suited to an experienced architect who can lead the modernization and migration of legacy mainframe workloads to AWS.
Position Details
- Location: Onsite; Richmond, VA preferred. Other preferred locations include McLean, VA; Dallas, TX; Chicago, IL; New York, NY; Boston, MA; Atlanta, GA; and San Francisco, CA.

Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and migration of legacy mainframe systems to AWS cloud environments.
- Assess existing infrastructure, define migration strategies, and create executable modernization roadmaps.
- Design cloud-native architectures aligned with enterprise standards for security, compliance, performance, and cost optimization.
- Develop plans to refactor, re-platform, or rehost mainframe applications.
- Partner with cloud architects, application developers, business analysts, and DevOps teams to deliver migration initiatives.
- Provide technical leadership, document architecture decisions, and mentor migration teams.
- Develop proofs of concept, reusable design patterns, and architecture frameworks for cloud adoption.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience with legacy mainframe systems, including COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
- Proven experience migrating mainframe workloads to AWS.
- Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS or Aurora, Lambda, CloudFormation, and API Gateway.
- Knowledge of cloud migration frameworks and tools such as Blu Age, Micro Focus, AWS Migration Hub, or CloudEndure.
- Expertise in data migration strategies, including database re-platforming from DB2 to AWS RDS.
