Position Overview:The General Physician position, Clinic and Community-Based, plays a crucial role in providing primary healthcare services to all patients. The physician is responsible for diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions, promoting preventative care, and offering patient education. The physician is responsible for clinical management of all patients identified as needing follow-up care by volunteer physicians in the communities or the clinical setting. Physicians serve as the point of contact for patients seeking medical assistance and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care. The physician will also collaborate with US volunteer primary care physicians and surgeons to create precise and achievable care plans for the patient.
Kay Responsibilities:Patient consultations and medical missions:Conduct thorough medical examinations and assessments of patients in clinic setting or in communities during medical missionsObtain and review medical history to understand patients’ health concernsPerform physical examinations to diagnose illness or injuriesProvide basic medical treatment and assist in coordination of specialty care for appropriate patientsOrder and interpret diagnostic testsDevelop and implement appropriate treatment plans based on diagnosisPrescribe medications and monitor patient responses to treatmentParticipate in medical mission clinics either in the facility or in the communitiesProvide follow-up care for patients in the communities following medical missionsTravel to patients’ homes in Bateys and other neighborhoods to provide follow up careWorking with pharmacy tech, supporting ongoing dispensation of medication for patientsUpdate and maintain accurate patient medical records in the electronic medical record system (EMR)Assist with building and prioritizing list of surgical patientsOptimize the health of surgical candidates to maximize the benefit of surgeries performedParticipate as a medical assistant in surgical procedures.Providing postoperative care to surgical patients.
Collaboration and educationCollaborate with specialists and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient careFoster relationship with medical school at Universidad Central del Este (UCE) and the local healthcare system, including Hospital Antonio MusaAssist patients in navigating local health care systemMake referrals to specialists when OWS is unable to continue careParticipate in education for visiting trainees, such as resident physicians and medical students from the USStay abreast of medical advancements and best practices through continuous learningAttend conferences, workshops and training sessions to enhance professional knowledgeCoordinate local medication order with medical director and primary care physiciansSupport with other OWS projects as needed and directed by Medical Director or Clinical Operations Director
Time commitment: The role is full-time, in person position, and the hours can extend according to evenings and weekends as needed, especially during medical mission weeks.

Education and requirements: Licensed physician in the Dominican Republic in good standing with active exequaturMinimum of 1-year experience working in a clinical setting either in public or private sectorConversational and written proficiency in English requiredStrong understanding of and involvement with local healthcare community, including the medical school of the Universidad Central del Este and the Hospital Antoinio MusaPassion for service and global healthAdvanced handling of Microsoft Office programs and proficiency in utilizing IT equipment.Active driver's licenseBasic level of spoken Creole is preferred
