Director of Billing

Our client, a leading professional services organization, is seeking an experienced Director of Billing to lead and optimize its billing operations across multiple locations. This strategic leadership role is responsible for overseeing billing teams, ensuring operational excellence, managing e-billing processes, driving process improvements, and supporting revenue cycle objectives.The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in billing operations, team leadership, systems optimization, and stakeholder management within a complex, fast-paced environment.

Position Summary
The Director of Billing is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the billing function. This role oversees billing managers and specialists, develops and implements policies and procedures, manages electronic billing operations, and serves as the primary escalation point for billing-related matters.Working closely with Finance, IT, Human Resources, and senior leadership, the Director of Billing will drive operational efficiency, improve billing performance, and leverage technology to support business growth and client satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Billing Operations LeadershipLead all billing operations and ensure accurate and timely invoice generation.Directly supervise Billing Managers and provide leadership to a billing team of approximately 30 professionals.Develop, implement, and maintain billing policies, procedures, and controls.Manage staffing, workflow allocation, and resource planning.Establish and monitor departmental performance metrics and service standards.Lead and manage a remote workforce while promoting accountability and collaboration.Revenue Cycle & E-Billing ManagementOversee all electronic billing platforms, processes, and vendor relationships.Develop and implement procedures for resolving invoice rejections, billing disputes, and short-pay situations.Ensure compliance with client billing guidelines and requirements.Partner with Accounts Receivable and Client Support teams to improve collections and reduce outstanding balances.Evaluate and coordinate new client e-billing implementations.Review and analyze month-end billing reports and operational metrics.Team Leadership & DevelopmentMentor, coach, and develop Billing Managers and Supervisors.Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing development opportunities.Partner with Human Resources on employee relations, succession planning, and workforce management initiatives.Foster a high-performance culture focused on continuous improvement and client service.Systems & Process ImprovementCollaborate with IT and Finance teams to identify, prioritize, and resolve system issues.Drive automation initiatives and workflow enhancements.Evaluate and implement new technologies to improve billing operations.Stay informed on industry trends, emerging billing technologies, and best practices.Stakeholder ManagementServe as the escalation point for attorneys, partners, executives, and business stakeholders on complex billing matters.Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.Provide recommendations to senior leadership regarding billing operations, efficiencies, and process improvements.
Required Qualifications
EducationBachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.Experience10+ years of progressive billing experience.10+ years of leadership and people management experience.Experience managing large billing teams in a multi-office or enterprise environment.Extensive experience with electronic billing systems and client billing compliance processes.Proven experience leading remote teams.Technical KnowledgeStrong knowledge of billing operations and revenue cycle management.Experience with e-billing platforms and vendor management.Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office 365.Strong analytical and reporting capabilities.Preferred QualificationsExperience within a large law firm, accounting firm, or professional services organization.Experience supporting complex billing structures, including Intellectual Property billing.Familiarity with:Elite 3EBillstreamProforma TrackerPaperless Billing SolutionsFinancial management systems used in professional services organizationsLeadership CompetenciesStrategic thinker with strong business acumen.Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.Strong organizational and project management skills.Effective decision-making and problem-solving abilities.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.Strong change management and continuous improvement mindset.
