Machine Shop Lead

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Depute for the Mechanical Manager and lead the Mechanical Department when delegated.
- Provide technical leadership for conventional, CNC and portable machining, line boring, shaft and bearing repairs, sleeve manufacture and other precision machining activities.
- Control machine shop work intake, prioritisation, resource allocation and job readiness.
- Review machining methods, tooling, tolerances, inspection requirements and acceptance criteria for critical work.
- Develop and professionalise machinists, supervisors and apprentices through coaching, criteria evaluation and performance assessment, succession planning and structured training.
- Maintain competence standards, machine availability targets, and manage the onboarding of new hires.
- Work with QHSE/OH&S to ensure compliance with all safety, health and environmental policies.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Minimum 15 years’ machining experience in ship repair, marine, offshore, power generation or comparable heavy industry.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in a senior supervisory role.
- Recognised machinist apprenticeship and trade qualification.
- Extensive experience in workshop and portable machining operations.
- Strong knowledge of machining theory, metallurgy, engineering drawings, tolerancing, tooling selection and quality assurance.
- Experience managing machine shop workflow, priorities, resources, productivity, documentation and technical standards.
- Demonstrated ability to develop high-performing technical teams through coaching and mentoring.
- Strong administrative, communication and team skills, including Microsoft Office and ERP.
- Ability to work safely and independently with minimum supervision and adhere to all company and customer safety and quality requirements.
- Exhibits strong leadership presence, professional credibility, situational awareness, sound engineering judgment and commitment to continuous improvement development.
- Strong written and verbal English communication.
- Ensures compliance with the company’s QHSE plan and processes.

BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE
- Minimum prior, marine engineering or offshore experience.
- Experience with cruise vessel propulsion systems, including Azipod and thrusters.
- Strong knowledge of marine data and industrial standards including ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, ISO, and OEM specifications.
- Experience working with OEMs, Classification Societies and customer representatives.
