MediaWiki PHP Engineer Gaming

RVStaffing has partnered with a rapidly growing video game publisher and technology company to identify a talented MediaWiki / PHP Engineer to join their team. Our client operates one of the largest independent gaming wiki platforms in the world, supporting hundreds of gaming communities through a highly customized MediaWiki ecosystem. With more than 1,500 active wikis running on a shared infrastructure, the platform is built for scale, performance, reliability, and continuous growth.
As the platform continues to expand, they are seeking a hands-on engineer to help develop and maintain the technology that powers millions of monthly users while supporting thriving gaming communities worldwide.
Position SummaryWe are looking for a hands-on MediaWiki / PHP Engineer with strong backend development experience and a passion for building scalable web platforms. In this role, you will contribute directly to the development and maintenance of a highly customized MediaWiki ecosystem, including proprietary extensions, platform infrastructure, and multi-tenant configuration systems.You will work across application development, platform engineering, automation, and infrastructure, helping ensure the stability, performance, and continued growth of one of the largest independent MediaWiki deployments in the gaming industry.The ideal candidate combines strong PHP development skills with an interest in large-scale systems, performance optimization, and open-source technologies.
What You'll DoMediaWiki DevelopmentDevelop, maintain, and enhance custom MediaWiki extensions that support platform functionality across more than 1,500 wikis.Contribute to a customized MediaWiki fork by implementing platform improvements, bug fixes, and performance enhancements.Design, develop, and deploy new features within the MediaWiki ecosystem.Work with MediaWiki hooks, configuration systems, APIs, and extension architecture.Support ongoing platform modernization efforts, including MediaWiki version upgrades and technical debt reduction initiatives.Platform Engineering & Multi-Wiki OperationsMaintain and improve the multi-tenant configuration and bootstrap systems that power the platform.Support wiki provisioning, per-wiki configuration management, and platform administration workflows.Automate maintenance tasks, deployment processes, and operational procedures to improve scalability and efficiency.Collaborate with technical teams to ensure platform consistency, reliability, and operational excellence.Performance & ScalabilityMonitor and optimize application performance across a large-scale wiki platform.Identify bottlenecks and implement solutions related to caching, database performance, search indexing, and application responsiveness.Optimize interactions with CDN, caching, and backend infrastructure layers.Support platform scalability initiatives as the ecosystem continues to grow.Infrastructure & Systems SupportWork closely with AWS-hosted infrastructure supporting the platform.Support and troubleshoot web servers, job processing systems, caching layers, databases, and search services.Contribute to deployment processes, system monitoring, and platform reliability improvements.Collaborate on infrastructure automation and operational tooling initiatives.
What You'll BringRequired Qualifications3+ years of professional PHP development experience.Strong knowledge of modern PHP, object-oriented programming, debugging, profiling, and performance optimization.Experience developing for MediaWiki, including extensions, hooks, configuration systems, and platform customization.Alternatively, deep experience with large-scale PHP platforms and a strong willingness to learn MediaWiki development.Experience working with MySQL or MariaDB, including schema design and query optimization.Working knowledge of Linux server environments and command-line tools.Experience with AWS services, including EC2 and core networking concepts.Strong Git and GitHub workflow experience across multiple repositories.Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.Advanced English communication skills (B2+/C1 needed).
Preferred QualificationsExperience working with large-scale MediaWiki deployments, wiki farms, or multi-tenant platforms.Previous experience with platforms such as Wikimedia, Fandom, Miraheze, or similar wiki ecosystems.Experience with Redis for caching and job queue management.Experience with Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or CirrusSearch.Knowledge of Cloudflare, CDN optimization, and edge caching strategies.Experience with nginx and PHP-FPM administration.Infrastructure-as-code, automation, or AMI-building experience.Exposure to Python, Go, TypeScript, or Lua (Scribunto).Active experience as a wiki editor, moderator, or administrator is highly valued.Passion for gaming and gaming communities is a strong plus.
