Job description
Elsipogtog School is seeking a Mi’kmaq Culture Educational Assistant to join our Mi’kmaq Language & Culture Program. Working alongside teachers, the Language & Culture Lead, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, this position will support students in developing a strong connection to Mi’kmaq culture, teachings, land, community, identity, and traditional ways of knowing and being.
The successful candidate will help create meaningful cultural learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom and support students in experiencing culture as a living part of everyday life.
Start Date/End Date: September 2026 – June 2027
Position Type: 10-month fixed-term school-year position, renewed annually depending on performance and available funding
Accountability: Reports to the Language & Culture Lead
Salary: Dependent on experience and qualifications
Responsibilities/Key Duties:
- Support Mi’kmaq cultural learning throughout the school day.
- Assist teachers with cultural activities, lessons, and projects.
- Support land based and outdoor education.
- Help students learn through hands-on and experiential activities.
- Support teachings connected to Mi’kmaq values, traditions, and ways of knowing.
- Assist with cultural activities, ceremonies, gatherings, and school events.
- Support Elder and Knowledge Keeper visits.
- Help prepare materials and spaces for cultural activities.
- Encourage students to participate respectfully in cultural learning.
- Build positive relationships with students through cultural activities and experiences.
- Support individual and small group learning.
- Assist students with different learning needs during cultural and outdoor activities.
- Help connect classroom learning with community, land, and culture.
- Work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, teachers, families, and community members.
- Support the visibility of Mi’kmaq culture and language throughout the school.
All cultural teachings and activities will follow appropriate community protocols and guidance from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, the Language & Culture Lead, and school leadership.
