Sr. Software Engineer, EC2 VPC

About the role

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a systems engineer for the EC2 NX Platforms team. The team owns the packet processing pipeline beneath every EC2 instance, adding encryption, firewalls (security groups), routing, billing, and monitoring to packets across its worldwide fleet.

The goal is to deliver bare-metal networking performance while improving EC2 security, availability, and reliability through Software Defined Networking (SDN). The platform powers new EC2 instance families and VPC features, as well as services like AWS Lambda and external workloads running on EC2. Code ships to production across the EC2 fleet, with frequent deployments and ownership from design through operation.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering on a small team and mentor junior engineers.
• Ensure the right development practices are followed.
• Work hands-on with the engineering team to manage day-to-day development activities.
• Lead architecture decisions and participate in designs and design reviews.

Requirements

• Expertise in C/C++ and highly optimized data structures, low-level hardware tuning, or high-performance networking.
• Passion for systems software engineering, such as kernel development, embedded systems, or high-performance networking.
• Ability to work toward processing millions of packets per second on a single CPU core.
