Lead Software Engineer AI - (Materia AI)

About the role

Thomson Reuters México is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to develop AI-powered systems that enhance accounting workflows through automation, intelligence, and orchestration. The role is with the CoCounsel for Tax and Accounting team, formed from the recent acquisition of the startup Materia.

The work focuses on owning end-to-end AI systems, from backend services and APIs to LLM-driven workflows in production. This is a hybrid role, and the interview process may include onsite interactions.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services that power generative AI agents and orchestration systems.
• Build performant, reliable, and adaptable AI-driven solutions for real-world use cases.
• Work with AI/ML engineers, frontend developers, product managers, and designers to build services supporting generative AI experiences.
• Help build core AI interfaces such as Conversations.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on Python backend experience, including FastAPI or Flask, APIs, and distributed systems.
• Proven experience in system design and architecture, building scalable, production-grade systems.
• Strong focus on Python, backend engineering, and real-world AI applications.
• Exposure to TypeScript or modern frontend frameworks is helpful, but not required.
