Sargent Corporation is seeking a Safety Director to join our collaborative team based in Orono, Maine. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Safety Director provides strategic oversight for all safety initiatives across the organization, ensuring compliance with OSHA, MSHA, and other regulatory requirements while fostering a safety-first culture. This position partners closely with operations, human resources, and field leadership to develop and implement comprehensive health and safety programs that protect employees, support operational excellence, and reinforce Sargent Corporation's commitment to workplace safety. The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader who combines regulatory expertise with a practical understanding of heavy construction operations and is willing to travel regularly to support projects and operations throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Virginia, and North Carolina.
Requirements of the Safety DirectorHigh School Diploma or GED required; safety-related education preferredExperience in heavy construction, earthwork, or related industriesExtensive knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, MUTCD, and FMCSR regulationsOSHA 30-Hour certificationStrong leadership and supervisory experienceExcellent listening, written, and verbal communication skillsExcellent organizational and project management abilitiesAbility to work collaboratively across departments and with field personnelProficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and HCSS Safety preferredAbility and willingness to travel regularly to project sites throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Virginia, and North CarolinaValid driver's license with a clean driving recordCommitment to fostering a positive safety culture

Responsibilities of the Safety DirectorDevelop, maintain, and oversee implementation of company health and safety programsLead and monitor the company's Safety Strategic PlanPartner with operations leadership to support safe and compliant project executionCollaborate with Human Resources on employee injuries, workers' compensation, and return-to-work processesDevelop site-specific safety plans and safe work proceduresOversee safety documentation, regulatory compliance, and reporting requirementsCoordinate employee safety orientation, training, certifications, and recordkeepingSupport and monitor weekly safety meetings across project sitesReview incidents and ensure thorough investigations and corrective actionsManage workers' compensation claims and related insurance programsMonitor key safety metrics, including EMR, OSHA logs, recordable incidents, and lost-time ratesConduct jobsite safety inspections and serve as a safety resource for field operationsParticipate in project planning to identify and address safety requirementsLead safety committees, stand-downs, and accident investigation activitiesParticipate in industry safety organizations and professional development opportunitiesOversee the selection, availability, and proper use of safety equipmentFoster continuous improvement and accountability throughout the organization
