Certified Phlebotomy Technician Joliet

Saint Joseph Medical Center - Joliet is seeking a Certified Phlebotomy Technician to perform blood specimen collection and related laboratory support tasks under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor.

responsibilities

• perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis
• enter data into computer systems, file documents, handle telephone communications, and perform other clerical duties
• demonstrate knowledge of laboratory test terminology
• use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment to collect specimens from newborns through geriatric patients
• process specimens related to microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank
• prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories
• stock and order routine laboratory supplies
• maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas
• process or load specimens on automated laboratory instruments according to established policies and procedures
• assist with sample pickup at hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail pickup/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and product deliveries
• may work in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts
• may be assigned as a Phlebotomy Lead
• perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager or director

qualifications

• high school diploma or equivalent required
• completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required
• certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required
• basic life support (BLS) certification required within forty-five days of hire and must be maintained current
